About Cumbria

Cumbria

Cumbria is a relatively young county having only been recognized in 1974. It lies in the North West region of England, just south of the Scottish border but just north of the Yorkshire Dales.

Perhaps the most notable area of Cumbria is the Lake District National Park. An area of exquisite natural beauty, the region is blessed with clear lakes, breath-taking scenery and clean air. The Lake District is famous for its links with the Lake Poets such as William Wordsworth. His birthplace can be visited at Wordsworth House and Garden. It is also home to Scafell Pike, the tallest peak in England.

Grizedale Forest Park is another splendid area of scenic views whilst Kendal Castle has timeless marks of history to show tourists. Hadrian's Wall that was the ancient wall built by Emperor Hadrian during the Roman Empire to defend England against the rebels from Scotland is also a fascinating structure to visit.

Carlisle is the only real big town in Cumbria with the area so vastly covered by countryside and national parks. Carlisle Castle has a very intriguing past and if visiting Carlisle itself, is worth a visit.
