Derbyshire

The county of Derbyshire is based in the East Midlands of England. Its central position within England makes it perfect for exploring the width and breadth of Britain. The Welsh border, east coast of England and the capital city of London are all only a couple of hours drive away.

The main attraction of Derbyshire is the Peak District National Park which was actually the first national park in Britain. There are countless bridle paths and walks to be enjoyed across the park which display exhilarating views and invigorating sights such as Mam Tor and Kinder Scout.

There are a large number of cities around the Derbyshire area including Derby with Nottingham, Leicester, Sheffield and Manchester all nearby. Bolsover Castle, Castleton and Chatsworth House are the best of the local attractions and the unique Heights of Abraham offers an interesting experience as a park on top of Masson Hill in Matlock Bath, accessible by cable car from the town below.

The National Trust also has a great choice of properties to visit in the area with Calke Abbey, Kedleston Hall and Sudbury Hall just a small taste of what is on offer.


Attractions & Heritage Sites within Derbyshire

1. Queen's Park - Chesterfield, Derbyshire, S40 2ND

Queen's Park opened in 1887 to celebrate Queen Victoria's Golden Jubilee. The park has been recently restored park and boasts on its attribute list a cafe, lake for boating, a miniature railway, and numerous places to play and explore. Those who visit during the summer can be treated to a brass instrumental concert on a sunny Sunday afternoon.

2. Blue John Cavern - Hope Valley, Derbyshire

One of only two still functioning mines producing the prized Blue John Stone mineral. While touring, a sightseer will follow the path of the dry riverbed which originally formed the caves. Visitors get the opportunity to see the Crystallised Cavern with its dome shaped roof, Stalactite Cavern showing the riverbed's journey and the twoo hundred foot high Variegated Cavern with its many colored walls.

3. Kedleston Hall - Kedleston, Derby

Kedleston Hall and its 820 acres is the former home to the Curzon family and features grandiose interior staterooms with much of the original furniture. Explore an assortment of sculptures that decorate the outdoor gardens, summer house, orangery, roses and many different kinds of shrubbery and flowers.
