About Leicestershire

Belvoir Castle, Leicestershire

Leicestershire is a county in the middle of England. It is landlocked and borders Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire, Rutland, Warwickshire, Staffordshire, Lincolnshire and Northamptonshire. The county town is Leicester.

There are a large number of historic buildings, gardens and museums to visit in the area. There is also a choice of modern attractions to visit. The county really is a contrast between the old and the new. Belvoir Castle is an historic estate that lies on 30,000 acres of land to represent the old the county has to offer and then there is the National Space Centre in Leicester that symbolizes the new era of the county.

The county also has a huge variety of Iron Age hill forts and market towns. There is also the site of the Battle of Bosworth which was the scene for the penultimate battle of the War of the Roses which was the war between the House of York and the House of Lancaster.

Donington Park race track has hosted grand prix events in the past and is also home to other motor sport events and music events.

1. Bradgate Country Park - Leicester, Leicestershire, LE6 0HE

Bradgate Country Park is Leicestershire's biggest country park and is located in the Charnwood Forest. The house is known as Bradgate House.

2. Wymondham Windmill - nr Melton Mowbray, Leicestershire, LE14 2BU - Tel No: 01572 787304

This windmill was built in 1814 out of ironstone, topped with brick, and outfitted with six sails. It is known as a Six Arm Lincolnshire Cross.

3. Leicester Cathedral - Leicester, Leicestershire, LE1 5DE - Tel No: 01162 625294

Leicester Cathedral in the city of Leicester is England's fourth smallest Anglican cathedral. Built around 1086 and originally known as St. Martin's. Significantly restored during the late 19th century.
