About Northumberland

Warkworth Castle, Northumberland

Northumberland is a county in the north east of England that borders with Scotland. It is linked with Durham and Tyne and Wear. It also has a border with the North Sea coastline that also possesses an area of outstanding natural beauty.

The county council is situated at Morpeth which is located on the River Wansbeck. Northumberland is the most sparsely populated county in England with a lot of the land area countryside. Northumberland National Park takes up a lot of this area with open moorland and the Cheviot Hills holding many untold stories of battles and skirmishes between the English and the Scots throughout the depths of time.

The Farne Islands are well renowned as a great location for bird-watching and seeing the grey seal population migrate. The historic island of Lindisfarne is also accessible depending on the tide and is well worth a visit.

Transport is tricky across the region with the A1 being the main route for cars from England right up through Northumberland to Edinburgh. Newcastle, Sunderland and Middlesbrough are all within easy reach of tourists staying in the region whilst with the Scottish Border so close it would be foolish not to cross the border and visit Scotland.
