About Staffordshire

Staffordshire

The county of Staffordshire lies in the west Midlands area of England with Stoke-on-Trent being the largest town in the area whilst Stafford is the county headquarters. The county touches lower reaches of the Peak District where the Staffordshire moorlands can be found in the north of the county.

Sites of interest around the county include Tamworth Castle which has remained fortified since the Anglo-Saxon era. Lichfield Cathedral is also a beautiful landmark which dates back to 700AD! The Staffordshire and Worcestershire Canal is also an idyllic route to enjoy some walking, cycling or even a barge weekend away.

The county is also home to two of Britain's largest theme parks. Alton Towers and Drayton Manor Theme Park have fun and frolics for all the family with white knuckle rides for those who are more adventurous and other, more subdued, forms of entertainment for those who want less endeavor.

There is also the legend of Mermaid's Pool at The Roaches in the county. It is said that the pool has mysterious powers. No fish or animals can survive in it and it is rumoured that once a year on Easter Eve at midnight a mermaid appears to either bless those that witness her with immortality or lure them to their watery grave.
