About County Londonderry

County Londonderry is known as a county of contrasts with the coastal towns and beaches in the north and the countryside and inland views in the south. The county is based in the north of Northern Ireland whilst also adjoining its south coast to the outstanding Lough Neagh.

Sport is prevalent in County Londonderry with Gaelic football maintaining strong competitors and Coleraine FC being the main representative in the Northern Irish Football League. Cricket is also popular within the county with the majority of cricket teams in the national league based in County Londonderry.

The county has several large cities and towns such as Derry, Coleraine and Limavady. The county also hosts a large number of reputed buildings and landscapes. These include the preserved 17th century walls of Derry and Mussenden Temple with its extravagant views over the Atlantic Ocean.

The impressive Sperrin Mountains in the south of the county are a great place for walks and really give an insight into the best that Northern Ireland has to offer on the scenic front.


Attractions & Heritage Sites within County Londonderry

1. Ness Country Park - Killaloo, Claudy, County Londonderry, BT47 3TR

This park is located in the beautiful Burntollet Valley, within a picturesque wooded glen. Extensive renovations have recently been conducted on the park, which consists of 55 mixed woodland hectares.

2. Foyle Valley Railway Museum - Foyle Road, Derry, County Londonderry, BT48 6SQ

The museum, which opened in 1989, contains exhibitions describing the rise and fall of the Derry railways. These exhibits contain memorabilia along with actual trains. The grounds are also next to the Riverside picnic area and park. 

3. Workhouse Museum and Library - 23 Glendermott Rd, Derry, County Londonderry, BT48 6BG

The Workhouse which opened in 1840, ceased being a Workhouse in the year 1948 but remained, until 1991, a hospital. Although much of the building was demolished, historians were able to save part of the original Workhouse.
