Caithness

Caithness is in the North East of Scotland and is part of the Highlands. The area is full of natural beauty with Mountains, Glens and Rolling farmland. There is an abundance of ancient monuments, castles and gardens to explore.

John O'Groats is the most northerly settlement in Great Britain and the Lands End to John O'Groats route often undertaken as a personal challenge and to raise funds for charity. Wick was the historic county town and has a castle and heritage center which boasts the largest museum in the north of Scotland.

1. The Caithness Broch Centre - The Old School House, Auckengill, Caithness, KW1 4XP

This new museum in north-east Caithness focuses on brochs and the communities associated with them. Brochs are tall circular drystone towers built over two thousand years ago.

2. The Castle of Mey - Thurso, Caithness, KW14 8XH

Gifted to the Trust by Queen Elizabeth in 1996, this castle is surrounded by a 12 feet high wall, known as the "Great Wall of Mey".

3. Laidhay Croft Museum - Laidhay, Dunbeath, Caithness, KW6 6EH

Prior to the 18th and 19th centuries, longhouses were familiar features across agricultural landscapes.
