About Nairnshire

Nairn Beach, Nairnshire

Nairnshire is a north-eastern Scottish county. As the fourth smallest such county in all of Scotland, it still manages to pack some scenic variety into its tiny borders. The seacoast features low lying dunes, and is bounded by sandbanks that make navigation difficult and dangerous. An unusual deposit of gravel and sand that spans inland for four to five miles rises ninety feet high. Behind it lies a gently rolling plain that continues to the west, the fertile Laigh of Moray.

To the south the landscape rapidly ascends up to the borders of Inverness-shire. This is where the main peaks are found in the county. A few of these hills along the border are higher than 2,000 feet above sea level. The chief of them is the Cam Glas at 2,162 feet.

Nairnshire's only significant rivers are the Nairn and the Findhorn. The Findhorn winds an impressive seventy miles through several counties before reaching the sea. The Nairn similarly runs through more than one county for a total of thirty-eight miles. The county of Nairnshire features eight lochs that are all smaller. The Loch of Clans proves to be interesting as a result of its many lake dwellings, known as Crannogs. The county is famous for its numerous lovely woods, along with a great deal of romantically beautiful scenery.
