About Sutherland

Sutherland

The county is located in the most northern part of Scotland and two of its borders lie along the Atlantic Ocean. The shoreline varies from steep cliffs to award winning sandy beaches. Inland are beautiful fitness trails to explore archaeology, witness native wildlife, or just enjoy the scenery. Visitors to Golspie venture through the Big Burn to see gorges and waterfalls, or witness salmon leaping at the River Shin in Lairg. Fitness enthusiasts travel the Sutherland Way Trail, which stretches 90 miles from Tongue to Lochinver.

The region has no limit of outdoor sports options. There are many locations for guests to enjoy ocean salmon and trout fishing and there are a number of scenic courses to play a few rounds of golf. Traditional Highland games take place during the summer months with activities for native Scots and visitors alike. Enjoy fresh seafood in a village restaurant or tour one of many traditional distilleries.

Sutherland is dotted with brochs, cairns, historical sites and numerous castles ranging from ancient remains to renovated estates. The French styled Dunrobin Castle, home to Scottish royalty since the 14th century, displays period décor, furnishings and costumes. The grounds include vast gardens and a falconry exhibit. The 17th century Dornoch Castle functions as a hotel and the medieval town also contains a 12th century cathedral and jail, which is now a gift shop. The elite Skibo Castle was the site of Madonna's wedding to Guy Ritchie.
