About Anglesey

Menai Straits Anglesey

Anglesey, natively known as Ynys Mon, is an island situated off the northwest coast of the mainland of Wales. It is accessible by two bridges, the Britannia Bridge and the more historic Menai Suspension Bridge, that cross over the Menai Strait. It possesses a large Welsh-speaking community with over 70% of the population of the island speaking Welsh as their native language and is rich in Celtic history.

Anglesey is a fairly large island and is actually a bigger island than the Isle of Man. The island has been long been linked with druids. There are plenty of interesting historical sights to see with King Arthur's seat at Beaumaris, The Skerries Lighthouse which is found at Holyhead and the quaint fishing village of Moelfre.

There are a number of beaches to discover with Red Wharf Bay and Cemlyn Bay to name just a couple. Anglesey has also hosted the National Eisteddfod in Wales three times in 1957, 1983 and 1999. The island participates in the International Island Games.

Transport links for Anglesey are fairly sufficient. The A55 runs from Holyhead to Chester whilst the A5 goes from Llanfairpwllgwyngyll to Bangor on the Welsh mainland. The North Wales Coastline Railway also allows for access from Crewe to Holyhead across the north coast of Wales. There is also a port at Holyhead to allow for ferry crossings to Dublin, Ireland.
