About Monmouthshire

Monmouth

Monmouthshire is located in the south east area of Wales and borders the country of England. Its main towns are Chepstow, Usk, Abergavenny and Monmouth itself.

The town of Monmouth is famous for its Georgian and Tudor architecture. A fine example of this is the stone gated bridge at Monnow Bridge. There is a wealth of places to visit in and around the area. The area is scattered with historic castles such as Raglan Castle, Grosmont Castle, Skenfrith Castle and Caldicot Castle. Tintern Abbey has some of the most spectacular ruins in Britain and offers a real taste of Welsh history.

Offa's Dyke is a huge linear earthwork that follows the rough line of the border between Wales and England. It can be considered as the Welsh equivalent of Hadrian's Wall! It was designated to protect the old English region of Mercia from the raiders and invaders from Powys in Wales.

The Wye Valley is also a part of Monmouthshire and is an area of natural outstanding beauty. Ross-on-Wye is the only town within this area but near by towns include Hereford, Monmouth and Chepstow. Chepstow is also home to the racing course which holds many meets throughout the year.
