The magnificent cathedral at Durham is considered to be one of the finest Norman buildings in Europe, and the city itself has tree-lined river banks walks, wonderful architecture and winding streets. There is excellent cycling and hill walking in the nearby Durham Dales, while other attractions include Alnwick Castle and Gardens and Hadrian's wall, both under an hour away. Pub serving food and a shop two miles away.
