Holiday Cottage - The Sweet Shop

Cottage Description

The Sweet Shop

The island is called Osea and is positioned on the Blackwater at the base of the Thames Estuary, a fact that makes it convenient for central London, despite its apparent remoteness. A river taxi runs offering access during tides.

The accommodation at the Sweet Shop offers accommodation based on an open plan sitting/dining room with open fire, well appointed kitchen area and 4 poster bed. Shower room/toilet.

The island is a marine sanctuary for rare birds and wildlife, and with its 350 acres and 4 miles of coastline with beaches there is much to explore. There is much in the way of evocative history with the village itself having firm roots going back to the 16th century, and two of the properties in the group having listed status.

The properties on the island are beautifully appointed, and there is much to keep you in the locality during your break, with an outdoor heated swimming pool, games room, viewing room, gym, sauna and tennis court. The owner can arrange a variety of activities as well as a chef to prepare meals for you (full details on request).

Touring on the mainland is great fun with visits to Maldon, Colchester, Mersea Island and family friendly Southend at the top of the list. The nearest pub and shops are three miles away.

The property has easy walking access, electric panel central heating included . Maximum of two well behaved pets allowed.

Customer Rating/Reviews

We stayed in the Sweet Shop at the end of November 2011. Even though we live 20 minutes away from Osea, this was a brilliant opportunity to go onto the private island and have a look around. We were so lucky with the weather and I really liked the Sweet Shop. It was perfect for two people and an old dog who all enjoy walking on the beach and across the countryside. We didn't intend to leave the island for the whole weekend so we stocked up on everything we might need (and the rest) and that was a good idea. There's no shop or pub so you have to make your own entertainment but it was a lovely quiet weekend (even with NDubz at the Manor House recording!). The island dog, Cyril, is totally cute and waits at the door to be let in so that he can sleep on the sofa and have his belly rubbed! The Sweet Shop isn't luxury but is nicely done out and the bed was very high up and comfortable. I hope Osea doesn't change because it really is like stepping back in time. Perfect place for two people who enjoy eachother's company and want a total "get away from it all" break. And the drive across the causeway was a great experience. It was an excellent relaxing holiday, very quiet and intimate.Perfect for walking around just wish we had taken the dogs with us! Author: Miss C, Canvey Island, Essex - Date Submitted: 04/2011

I would recommend it as a total escape from everyday hustle and bustle and what seems like a trip back in time. There are loads of things to do at no extra cost that are fun and the whole area is so relaxing along with the uniqueness of the situation of the island.
