Local Area Information
Local Area Description: Guernsey is located approximately 30 miles west of the French coast and 75 miles south of Weymouth, in the bay of St Malo. The close proximity of the Atlantic ocean allows Guernsey to enjoy a much milder climate than both the UK and nearby France. The main town of St Peter Port retains much of it's historic character with cobbled streets and quaint independent shops offering a wide range of goods, with the added benefit of no VAT being applied. Guernsey is a British Crown possession, but not part of either the UK or the European Union so therefore purchases made in Guernsey are exempt from all UK and EU duty and taxes. Guernsey has a fine selection of bars, bistros and restaurants, offering a wide choice of menus from around the world, many providing locally sourced, quality produce from both land and sea. Briquet cottages are flanked by the beautiful sandy beaches of L'Eree to the South and Vazon Bay to the North with "the locals beach" Perelle Bay being closest, complete with fishing boats and crab pots. It often amazes visitors to our shores the number and diversity of sports activities available within just 24 square miles. Cycling, walking, golf, tennis, swimming, scuba, bowls, fishing, cliff walking, museums, the arts - an almost endless list of sports and pastimes. With its' age-old recipe of clean waters, fresh air and clear light, Guernsey's beaches are the ultimate, natural antidotes to modern day stress. Over 100 miles of coastline is the setting for a variety of sandy beaches and dunes, secret coves, rock pools and rugged harbours. The coastal cliffs, quiet lanes and nearby National Trust of Guernsey nature reserves provide breath-taking views and relaxing tranquil holiday walks. Guernsey also has a developed, well mapped series of tourist cycle routes. There is a handy bus stop nearby the cottages and during the Summer months a scenic bus service travels the coastal route to St. Peter Port (and back!). There are a wealth of museums, of the nice unstuffy variety, telling of our rich Guernsey heritage just waiting for you to discover. From Iron Age finds to Roman wrecks and Napoleonic defences to the German occupation. Guernsey history is truly intriguing. Fort Grey Maritime museum, St Apollines Chapel (the patron saint of dentists, didn't you know?) and Les Trepied Dolmen - where witches are said to gather, are all within striking distance of Briquet Cottages.
