This 17th century coaching inn which was mentioned in the Novel Northanger Abbey by Jane Austen after she visited the house during her childhood was built on the site of a 12th century priory (which was destroyed by Henry the VIII) to provide rest to travellers on the Bath-Gloucester route and was extended in the Georgian period to its present state. In more recent times it has undergone an extensive makeover to ensure that the propertys unique character is complimented by the convenience and reliability of contemporary amenities. On three Acres of land with wonderful landscaped gardens guests can take pleasure in a peaceful drink or go al fresco and take pleasure in meals in the garden or simply take a long stroll around the Water Garden ideally located to the east of the main house to catch the sun the water garden is also illuminated at night to enhance the colours. The rooms offer a blend of country traditions with contemporary en-suite facilities each with their own unique character and named after renowned female writers. Rooms also boast a high standard of comfort and come with such features as Sky TV Hot Beverage making facilities broadband and Luxury BathShower facilities. Guests can dine in the Bodkin Restaurant. A newly redecorated air conditioned informal dining area. Whether it be from the Specialist menu the Off the wall menu or the Ala Carte menu which changes weekly all food is created using the best local and organic ingredients and also caters for vegetarians and children. Diners can make use of the Bodkin restaurant or they can take pleasure in their meals out on the patio or sun terrace in the summer either way an pleasurable experience is guaranteed. The hotel also provides a fully stocked bar with a range of guest ales good single malts and an extensive wine list which is also available to diners. Guests can also partake of a Bar Meal from the bar menu if they dont wish to go for a full meal in the restaurant. As with the Restaurant guests can take pleasure in their favourite drinks in excellent company either in the Bar with its roaring Log Fire which is excellent in the winter months or they can retire to the sun deck and unwind ideal for those lazy summers.
