Hotel - The Trooper Inn

Hotel Description

The Trooper Inn

Located at the highest point in Hampshire in the heart of the countryside the Trooper is 1 of the countys finest pubs. The first bricks of this picturesque Inn are reputed to have been laid in at the beginning of the 17th century and in the 400 years since the building has had a chequered history. At the turn of the last century it was a busy stopover on what was then the main route to London as well as the inn of choice for local hunting parties.

At the outset of the First World War it is said that the pub was used as a recruiting centre for troops although it is not known whether this was the source of the Trooper name. Since the end of the excellent War The Trooper has been home to a welcoming ghost. Local folklore tells that he rides across the fields opposite the inn. More recent history saw the Pub at the Top of the Hill allowed to drift into decline.

An unreliable electricity supply even saw it gain the nickname the Pub with the Candles after its primary lighting source. The candlelight tradition has been enhanced at the Trooper but these days supported by a more dependable electricity supply! In the mid 90s the Trooper faced closure and renovation to a housing development but was rescued from this fate by the wholehearted opposition of the villagers who objected to losing their local watering hole.

It was at this time that the present owner's took over and embarked on the regeneration of this amazing pub. In the years since the Trooper has built an desirable reputation for the quality of its food and drink as well as for the brilliant level of service and friendly atmosphere. The hotel is open all year round (with a slightly reduced service on Christmas Day Boxing Day and New Years Day).

The restaurant and bar is open from Monday evening until Sunday lunch (closed Sunday evening and Monday lunch). Each of the 8 en suite rooms has its own individual character - they are each named after a local village or landmark and feature pictures by local photographer Jon Furley. All of the rooms are comfy and attractively decorated and most have amazing views across the Hampshire downs. Each room boasts a full range of facilities as well as en suite coffee and tea making facilities TV phone hairdryer and trouser press. Please note that we have 8 rooms in total (1 x twin on the ground floor Stoner; one x double with shower Privett; four x doubles with bathshower on the on the first floor is a Oakshott Selborne Ashford and Empshott; two x doubles with bath on the second floor Chawton and East Tisted - each room type is shown twice to indicate double or single occupany rates just and may not be booked multiple times on the same night - the allocation is not automatically updated for the single occupancy room rate when a double room is booked and vice versa! The Trooper makes an brilliant base for a restful and pleasurable break.
