This old sandstone castle begun life in 1399 and was slowly added to over the next 70 years. Entry to the castle is over a wooden footbridge crossing the moat.

Mining dominated the landscape and people and this museum takes you on a journey through the history of the mineral mines and its people of the North Pennines.
The Castle is located in Carlisle centre and dominates the landscape as it has done for nearly a thousand years. There is much to see in this castle due to its long history. Many famous people have been imprisoned here such as Mary Queen of Scots. There is also a military museum free of charge here.
4. Sizergh Castle and Garden - Sizergh, nr Kendal, Cumbria, LA8 8AE - Tel No: 015395 60951
This unique limestone medieval house is still inhabited by the Strickland family for whom it was originally built for in the middle ages. The house was extended in Elizabethan times and has excellent examples of oak-panelled rooms, portraits and fine furniture and the house is surrounded by picturesque gardens. Sizergh Castle
On Coniston Water you will find the National trust's only steam yacht that carries passengers. This wonderful fully rebuilt steam powered yacht set against the picturesque Coniston water combines a Venetian Gondola with Victorian steam technology.
6. Fell Foot Park - Newby Bridge, Ulverston, Cumbria, LA12 8NN - Tel No: 015395 31273
This is a country park adjacent to Lake Windermere offering lots of access to the like for rowing boat hire and picnic areas. Apart from spectacular view of Lakeland fells there are also rhododendrons and daffodils on display.
This is a fine example of a 17th century slate and Lakeland stone house once owned by a wealthy Yeoman family. There are some fine examples of furniture here too such as rugs and carved furniture some possibly made by the previous occupants. Townend Stone House
8. Wordsworth House and Garden - Main Street, Cockermouth, Cumbria, CA13 9RX - Tel No: 01900 820884
This is the townhouse from the 1770's where the famous William Wordsworth was born and lived as a child. Interpreters dressed in costumes explain the workings of a family in this period and show interactive demonstrations and there are lots to see including the working kitchen. There is also a stunning walled garden growing fruit and vegetables from that period.
