Derbyshire Attractions (Places to Visit)

 

1. Gullivers - Matlock, Derbyshire, DE4 3PG - Tel No: 01629 580540

An environment full of nothing but fun is found inside the walls of Gulliver's World. Located on a steep hill that provides this fun zone with an overall splendid view of its surroundings, Gulliver's is aimed at the family crowd with adolescents between 2 and 13 years. Six different themed areas of the park give visitors a smorgasbord of places to eat, shop for gifts and souvenirs, experience the various rides, and watch one or two of the scheduled shows.

2. The Heights of Abraham - Matlock Bath, Derbyshire, DE4 3PD - Tel No: 01629 582365

One of the most popular Peak's District destinations, the Heights of Abraham offers two different caverns to investigate. Masson Cavern is dug deep into the hillside, with the glow of a solitary miner's candle softly lighting the way for the guide and his group of travelers. Rutland Cavern is an exhibit that portrays what life was like for a typical lead mining family during the 17th century. Also experience the cable car system, the first of its kind in Britain.

3. Blue John Cavern - Hope Valley, Derbyshire, S33 8WP - Tel No: 01433 620638

One of only two still functioning mines producing the prized Blue John Stone mineral, Blue John Cavern is actually a series of caves descending a total depth of 214 feet. While touring, a sightseer will follow the path of the dry riverbed which originally formed the caves. Visitors also get the opportunity to see the Crystallised Cavern with its dome-shaped roof, Stalactite Cavern showing the riverbed's onward journey, and the 200 foot high Variegated Cavern with its many colored walls. 

4. Treak Cliff Cavern - Hope Valley, Derbyshire, S33 8WP - Tel No: 01433 620571

Having been called a "Site of Special Scientific Interest" for many years, viewing of the Blue John Stone is the main enticement for Treak Cliff Cavern's visitors. Inside is the opportunity to see the largest piece of Blue John Stone ever found. Alternate varieties of rocks and minerals wait to greet those who take an outing to this cavern, which is also the second of the only two Blue John Stone mines in the world still actively producing the mineral.

5. Sudbury Hall and the National Trust Museum of Childhood - Sudbury, Ashbourne, Derbyshire, DE6 5HT - Tel No: 01283 585305

A family home crafted in the 17th century, this estate was built for George Vernon in the 1660's. What used to be the building's Victorian wing now holds the National Trust Museum of Childhood with activities for all children. Have an afternoon picnic, run free as the wind in the green meadows surrounding this expansive property, or take a walk through a door in the garden wall and visit the All Saints Church and family monuments on the other side.

6. Crich Tramway Village - nr Matlock, Derbyshire, DE4 5DP - Tel No: 01773 854321

Trams of all kinds adorn this village. Take a ride through history on a vintage tram traveling in the fresh air of the countryside, where breathtaking views await the visitor. Explore the National Tramway Museum in the village, and tour the Workshop Viewing Gallery where watching trams being restored is the order of the day. Round out the journey on the Woodland Walk and Sculpture Trail, or take a trip to the Red Lion Pub, tearooms, or other numerous shops.

7. Queen's Park - Chesterfield, Derbyshire, S40 2ND - Tel No: 01246 345777

Opened in 1887 to honor Queen Victoria's Golden Jubilee, Queen's Park now serves as home base to the Derbyshire County Crickets Club. Yet travelers can do more than just being spectators at an exciting cricket competition. Those who visit during the summer can be treated to a brass instrumental concert on a sunny Sunday afternoon. The recently restored park now boasts on its attribute list a cafe, lake for boating, a miniature railway, and numerous places to play and explore.

An estate house located within the greenery of Derbyshire's Peak District National Park and long known as one of Britain's favorite and most loved houses, the estate is full of history and famous works of art.
