History and Heritage Sites in Durham

 

1. Durham Heritage Centre and Museum - St Mary-le-bow, North Bailey, Durham, County Durham, DH1 3ET - Tel No: 01913 845589

Located next to the Durham Cathedral this historical site talks about the medieval times to the present times. The museum offers exhibitions, activities, videos, and models for families to enjoy. There is also a shop and many hands-on activities for kids. There is also a special program for school groups. 

2. Barnard Castle - Barnard Castle, County Durham, DL12 8PR

This massive fortress was built by the Normans in the 12th century. It is made of stone and divided in four wards, with ditches. It is located at the center of the town that has its name, a historical market town. Today, English Heritage owns it. It is open to the public to enjoy. Its amazing bold architecture speaks greatly of its times. 

3. Aukland Castle Deer House - Aukland, County Durham, DL14 7NR

This is the Bishop's official residence and it has been for over 800 years. It serves as the Diocese's administrative headquarters, but is opened to the public to visit from Easter Sunday until September's last Sunday. It is home to a collection of Surbaran paintings. The castle is part of the 800 acres of countryside parkland where families can picnic.

4. Raby Castle - Staindrop, County Durham, DL2 3AH - Tel No: 01833 660202

This medieval castle is one of the finest in England. It is open to the public for tours seasonally. The magnificent interiors house a fine art collection. The castle towers and turrets are impressive. Two hundred acres of Deer Park surrounds it and the gorgeous eighteen-century ornamental gardens will take your breath away. There is a coach house with a collection of carriages, a gift shop, and stable tearooms. Today, the Vane family owns it - since 1626.

5. The Bowes Museum - Newgate, Barnard Castle, County Durham, DL12 8NP - Tel No: 01833 690606

Located in the historic town of Barnard Castle, this building is home to a fine collection of art, as well as decorative fine pieces. It was built in the 19th century. It is a French style chateau and it houses over 20 galleries, a gift shop, a cafe, and there are many activities geared to entertain children while visiting. The surrounding gardens and park settings are exquisite as well. 

6. Crook Hall and Gardens - Sidegate, Durham, County Durham, DH1 5SZ - Tel No: 01913 848028

This private residence is owned by Keith and Maggie Bell. They open it to the public to share its beautiful surroundings of English gardens. It is also conveniently located at walking distance from the historic market. Homemade cream tea is served at the courtyard or Georgian dining room. Crook Hall is a fine example of different areas where visitors can appreciate medieval, Georgian, and Jacobean architecture. Offers guided tours and many special events during the year. 

7. Binchester Roman Fort - Binchester, Bishop Aukland, County Durham, DL14 8DJ - Tel No: 01388 663089

This fort is open to the public and visitors can see the ruins of a Roman Bath House. The bathhouse has an under floor heating system more than 1700 years old, very impressive technology for the times. It used to be home to a cavalry regiment. A town grew around it is of archaeological importance.
