The Isle of Wight is a unique area with a rich history and lots of sightseeing activities to keep tourists amused. It is situated about four miles off the south coast of England in the Solent region of the English Channel.
Due to the more southern location the Isle of Wight is often gifted with more warmer and sunnier weather than most parts of England. This makes it a popular tourist destination. The fact it is easily accessed via a ferry route also means it is in high demand.
The Isle of Wight is the largest island that is part of the United Kingdom. It has something for everyone with attractions suitable for all the family such as Blackgang Chine. The beaches of Sandown and Ventnor were awarded with blue flag status last year. The Isle of Wight Festival attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors every year whilst the Cowes Week is a world famous sailing regatta that attracts the attention of the world every year. The Needles are a fantastic natural landmark that are similar to Land's End in their appearance as they form a cliff structure off the coast of the island.
Measuring just 23 by 13 miles, the island is a place of natural beauty, with stunning countryside and dramatic coastal views. Two heritage coasts provide spectacular cliffs and charming beaches that cover nearly half of this beautiful island.
In 2009 the island had two beaches awarded blue flag status, Sandown and Ventnor, which lie on the east coast. However, within the 92km of coastline lie quieter beaches away from the tourist towns including Brook, Totland and Colwell bay. Walking and cycling are popular pastimes on the island aided by the breathtaking views that can be accessed whilst travelling by foot or by bike.
The Island is easy to get to with 3 car ferry routes varying in travel time from 35 to 60 minutes, or 3 foot passenger services taking between 10 to 23 these provide a constant and easy link to the Island from the south coast of England. Pretty unspoilt villages, breathtaking scenery and a friendly and welcoming atmosphere all contribute to a holiday on an unforgettable island.
