The family oriented location represents the ultimate in children's playgrounds. The park is designed with numerous popular specialty themes and dozens of areas to explore. Children have the opportunity to indulge in exercise and imagination with the assistance of colourful environments that include life-sized structures, animatronics and rides. Young guests experience being royalty for a day in the massive Lollipoppet Castle, or embark on an adventure in the western town or pirate themed areas. Adventureland also contains public facilities and eateries. 

2. The City Of Caves - Broadmarsh Shopping Centre, Nottingham, Nottinghamshire, NG1 7LS - Tel No: 01159 881955

Researchers believe the manmade underground system was constructed during the dark ages of the Anglo/Saxon period. Citizens used the network of caves until after WWII. Accessible through the Broadmarsh Shopping Centre, visitors journey to the depths below Nottinghamshire to experience a hidden world where people once lived, worked, worshipped and took refuge. Impoverished medieval families lived here. Druids held ceremonies around a mysterious well. Certain local craftsmen worked night and day within the caverns on various trades in an effort to make a living.

For centuries, man has harnessed the wind to power machinery and the operational Tuxford Windmill is an historical example. The windmill grinds grain into flour. Tours of the facility allow visitors to witness firsthand the process of making flour and readying the product for market. The location also contains the Tea House, which provides refreshments, delectable baked goods and traditional meals; all made from local produce and milled grains. The onsite Mill Shop offers fresh milled flours, souvenirs and tasty treats.

Sherwood Forest in Nottinghamshire

4. Sherwood Forest Country Park - Mansfield, Nottinghamshire, NG21 9HN - Tel No: 01623 823202

Evidence suggests that civilizations dating back to prehistoric times have frequented the location for various reasons. Since the dark and middle ages, farmers and landowners used the wood for buildings. Royalty considered the forest a private hunting ground. Visitors can view the ruins of what once was King John's hunting lodge. However, the most popular person equated with Sherwood Forest was and is Robin Hood. An exhibition of the legendary hero based on the current Hollywood production is currently on display. The country park also contains a restaurant, water sports centre and is a popular destination for many outdoor activities. 

5. Great Central Railway Nottingham - Ruddington, Nottinghamshire, NG11 6NX - Tel No: 01159 405705

The GCR was in service from 1899 into the late 1960's and now serves as a popular family attraction and historical centre. The railway provides visitors with the experience of a picturesque train ride from south Nottingham to Loughborough and back. Authentic steam and diesel engines power the trains. Located in the Country Park, the Ruddington Heritage Centre also contains a miniature railway, a model railway, bus museum, cafeterias and a play area. 

6. Galleries of Justice Museum - The Lace Market, Nottingham, Nottinghamshire, NG1 1HN - Tel No: 0115 9520555

Artefacts found deep below Nottingham and the history of the museum itself, link the location with crime and punishment since the dark ages. Visitors of all ages are welcome to learn how justice was determined and observe the tools of punishment used. Hear the tales of famous and infamous criminals including Nottingham's own Robin Hood. Witness the injustice as the Sheriff of Nottingham puts Robin on trail or be brave enough to visit the locations of unsolved mysteries and hauntings. 

7. Wheelgate Adventure Park - Farnsfield, Newark, Nottinghamshire, NG22 8HX - Tel No: 01623 882773

Located near the Sherwood Forest, the Wheelgate Adventure Park provides fun and entertainment for the entire family. Kids of all ages ride the bumper boats, cars, roller coasters and trains. Inside the massive 4-story indoor play centre, children expend energy climbing, jumping, manoeuvring through mazes and obstacle courses or slide down an unusual collection of slides. Numerous live animal exhibits provide a memorable interactive experience between children and baby animals, in addition to arachnids, insects, raptors and reptiles. 

8. Vicar Water Country Park - Mansfield, Nottinghamshire, NG21 9AA  - Tel No: 01623 466340

The location, a popular recreation site since Victorian times, provides a relaxing outdoor atmosphere for everyone. There are various habitats to encourage wildlife and the historic pond is the perfect place for little ones to catch that first fish. Extensive trails run around and through the 80-hectare area, with some leading to other parks and preserves. Walking, cycling and horseback riding are permitted. The park contains picnic areas, public facilities and a restaurant.
