History and Heritage Sites in Nottinghamshire

1. Newark Air Museum - Newark, Nottinghamshire, NG24 2NY - Tel No: 01636 707170

Aviation history buffs and aircraft enthusiasts enjoy the indoor and outdoor exhibits at the facility located at Winthorpe. Making use of a retired Royal Air Force station, a group of individuals compiled an ever-growing collection of fighting, recon, training and transport aircraft. Currently, 70 authentic aircraft, cockpits and engines are on display and the assortment includes bomber planes to helicopters. The site also houses a cafe and gift shop. 

2. The Workhouse - Upton Road, Southwell, Nottinghamshire, NG25 0PT - Tel No: 01636 817260

Established in 1824 by Reverend John Becher, the massive location served as the introduction of a cruel welfare system. The jobless and homeless, individuals and families entered the workhouse and performed a wide variety of duties including animal husbandry, cleaning, farming and general maintenance. The administrators separated the men, women and children. Everyone wore uniforms and lived a controlled and structured existence. These facilities were commonplace. With the exception of this location, most fell into a state of disrepair and are not open for visitation.

3. Nottingham Castle - Nottingham, Nottinghamshire, NG1 6EL - Tel No: 08444 775678

Though the original 11th century castle has been destroyed, the site contains a medieval gatehouse, caves, dungeons and a 17th century royal palace. The palace houses an art gallery and museum, which displays historical fine art, jewellery, silver and pottery. The museum also exhibits clothing and accessories from around the world, in addition to memorabilia from the recent Hollywood production of Robin Hood. Special interactive exhibits and a medieval playground are available for children.

4. Thrumpton Hall - Thrumpton, Nottinghamshire, NG11 0AX - Tel No: 01159 374147

This picturesque, sprawling 16th century estate boasts a lineage that includes the famous poet Lord Byron. In addition to the hall, the landscape includes a courtyard, forest, gardens, lake and lawns. Maintained in period furnishings and decor, the interior is exquisite. The facility hosts weddings and large gatherings and daily group tours are available by appointment. 

5. Newark Castle - Castlegate, Newark, Nottinghamshire, NG24 1BG - Tel No: 01636 655765

Built by the Saxons during the 11th century and renovated during the 14th century, the elaborately designed Newark Castle, situated along the river Trent, is an important landmark in Nottingham history. The castle changed ownership numerous times and the manor estate once belonged to Henry VIII. In spite of renovations and additions, the site fell into disrepair. The castle now consists of the chapel, curtain wall, gatehouse, lodging and northwest tower. A heritage centre on the grounds provides information about the castle and the town's history. 

6. Newstead Abbey Historic House and Gardens - Newstead Abbey Park, Nottingham, Nottinghamshire, NG15 8NA - Tel No: 01623 455900

Originally constructed as an Augustinian monastery in the 12th century, the religious order was disbanded by Henry VIII during the 16th century. The monarch bestowed the property upon the family of famed poet Lord Byron. Unable to meet the financial demands of the estate, the controversial writer sold the location during the 19th century. The Abbey contains a museum dedicated to Lord Byron, which includes his furnishings and personal possessions. The estate landscape consists of expansive lawns, a courtyard and fern, Japanese, rose and Spanish gardens. 

7. The Museum of Nottingham Life  - Brewhouse Yard, Nottingham, Nottinghamshire,  NG7 1FB - Tel No: 01159 153600

Contained within five authentic 17th century homes is an interesting museum that exhibits 300 years of history pertaining to the daily lives of Nottingham citizens. Single rooms to an entire row of shops were recreated to depict life during various periods in history. A special gallery houses artifacts and items either made by, or once used by local residents. Explore what life was like lacking modern conveniences and imagine shopping without a multitude of choices.
