1. Didcot Railway Centre - Station Road, Didcot, Oxfordshire, OX11 7NJ - Tel No: 01235 817200?
Located at the Didcot Parkway railway station some 10 miles south of Oxford, the Centre is open weekends all year, and on weekdays in some parts of the year as well. The Engine Shed, Locomotive Works, Didcot Halt, Carriage and Western Display, and other highlights are visible along the main and branch lines of track, accessible either by train or on foot. The Centre also includes a museum containing relics and items from the Great Western Railway's history.
The brewery offers guided tours (pre-booked only, please) of the brewery itself and the museums, finishing with a beer sampling. Located in the village of the same name, it was established in 1849 and continues making traditionally-brewed beers ('real ale') to this day. Much of the original equipment is still present, and can be seen on the tour.
3. Cotswold Wildlife Park - Burford, Oxfordshire, OX18 4JP - Tel No: 01993 823006
From anacondas to zebus, the animals in this park are sure to fascinate and educate every visitor. Its 160 acres provide an extensive setting for the exhibits and events. The farmyard with approachable animals, a playground, and a collection of brass plates for rubbings are of particular appeal to children, and visitors of all ages will enjoy watching animal-feedings and riding the railway around the park.
4. University Museum of Natural History - Parks Road, Oxford, Oxfordshire, OX1 3PW - Tel No: 01865 272950
150 years old as of 2010, the University Museum is a treasure trove of natural wonders, displaying animals both current (bee hives and swifts) and extinct (dinosaurs and dodos), architecture, and even an unimaginably old meteorite. The exhibits change from time to time, but no matter the lineup, there's certain to be something for everyone.
5. Northmoor Trust Estate - Hill Farm, Little Wittenham, Abingdon, Oxfordshire, OX14 4QZ - Tel No: 01865 407792
About 10 miles south of Oxford near Little Wittenham, the Northmoor Trust covers 300 hectares, including an extensive nature reserve. The Trust's purpose is to exhibit sustainable farming, forestry, and general land management in a sensible fashion. Visitors can explore the land, including the nature reserve, the arboretum, and the wood, among other locations. There is also an interactive visitor's centre available.
6. The Oxfordshire Museum - Fletcher's House, Park Street, Woodstock, Oxfordshire, OX20 1SN - Tel No: 01993 811456
With 11 galleries and assorted exhibitions, the Oxfordshire Museum is filled with information and enjoyment. The gardens (including a dinosaur garden!) are particularly lovely. Consider taking tea or coffee in the gardens, and be sure to check out the stainless steel sculptures while you're there. Recent exhibitions have ranged from superheroes to Winston Churchill. Admission is free!
7. The Waterfowl Sanctuary & Children's Farm - Wigginton Heath, Banbury, Oxfordshire , OX15 4LQ - Tel No: 01608 730252
Open six days a week until 5:30 pm (or dusk if earlier), this sanctuary is home to far more than just waterfowl. Goats, cattle, ponies, and more - including a few rather exotic animals - can be found here, and many can be fed by visitors. There's even a pet shop at which some animals can be purchased. A must-see for any animal-lovers finding themselves in the vicinity of Wigginton Heath.
8. Cutteslowe & Sunnymead Park - Cutteslowe Park, Oxford, Oxfordshire , OX2 8ES - Tel No: 01865 249811
As the largest park in Oxford, this is a wonderful place to relax and play, whether in the paddling pool, wandering the flower beds, or watching the ducks. Options for more active enjoyment include a miniature railway, an orienteering course, a skate park, tennis courts, and football pitches. Find it in the far north of Oxford.
