Rutland Water is a reservoir of drinking water which is located in Rutland County, England. The largest reservoir in England was opened in 1976 and was originally called Empingham Reservoir. Rutland Water provides water to the most closely populated area of the U.K. It is also the largest manmade lake in all of England. In 1983, Barnsdale Gardens was created by Geoff Hamilton and was transformed from a plain field into a series of 38 gorgeous gardens covering 8 acres of beautiful land. Along with the dazzling gardens, the stunning location features a lovely nursery which houses numerous species of plants, including those which are very rare. These plants are grown in the garden and are sold on site to customers. Barnsdale Gardens also offers a quaint tearoom for guests.
Now an operating flour mill, the Whissendine Windmill was built in 1806. Although the mill was non functional for many years, the wind power was restored by Miller Nigel Moon in 2006. The village of Whissendine is also home to two well known pubs, The Three Horseshoes and The White Lion, as well as a Village Hall, Sports Club, and an old Methodist Church.

On a narrow strip of land jutting into Rutland Water, the Normanton Church Museum is a antique building built by Thomas Cundy, an architect who created the building for the Earl of Ancaster. Built on the foundations of 14th century structures, the church was constructed during the 1760s. Although there was a risk that the creation of Rutland Water in the 1970s would destroy the structure, it survived due to reinforcement of its foundation against potential water damage.
