About Suffolk

Suffolk

Suffolk is a county in the East Anglia region of England and is mainly low lying, sharing many geographical similarities with Norfolk. The area is mainly wetland and has a firm arable farming heritage. The Norfolk Broads are in the northern area of the county and that offers great views and picturesque scenery.

The area is famed for being the setting for some of the most ancient historic moments in British history such as the plotting of the Magna Carta in 1215, the founding of the monastery in Bury St Edmunds in 630AD whilst also being the site of the oldest known inhabited dwelling at Clare. In fact, archaeological discoveries have dated the activity in the area as far back as 7,000BC!

The county is renowned for being the home of two of Britain's greatest artists, John Constable and Thomas Gainsborough. The Stour Valley has even taken on the nickname of being 'Constable Country'.

Urban settlements in the area include Ipswich and Lowestoft. Historic market towns scatter the county with the famous racecourse Newmarket sitting in the county boundaries. The National Horse Racing Museum and the National Stud are other places of interest. The Suffolk coastline to the east also provides breath-taking views and awe-inspiring scenery.
