1. Rural Life Centre - Tilford, Farnham, Surrey, GU10 2DL - Tel No: 01252 795571
The Rural Life Centre in Tilford is more than a museum of country life. Covering 10-plus acres of woodlands and out buildings, the center encompasses an expansive collection of farming implements that represent more than 150 years of rural life. A history of village life from the 1800s is on display, including a country post office and a village inn. An arboretum with more than 100 tree species adds to the highlights.
2. Clandon Park - West Clandon, Guildford, Surrey, GU4 7RQ - Tel No: 01483 222482
Clandon Park is a Palladian mansion constructed in the early 1730s, and since the National Trust's oversight began, the mansion has been extensively restored and redecorated. Rooms inside feature a Marble Hall, a Tapestry Room and a large selection of 18th-century furniture and porcelain is on display. The Royal Surrey Regiment Museum is located on the property.
First built in 1066, Guildford Castle's royal apartments was a luxurious residence during the reign of Henry III. In 1885, the ruins were bought by Guildford Borough Council, which converted the castle into a park. Today, the Castle Keep is all that is left of the original Guildford Castle, built by the Normans in the 12th century. Take a stroll along the River Wey for a glance into medieval times.
4. Painshill Park - Cobham, Surrey, KT11 1JE - Tel No: 01932 868113
Painshill Park, located in Cobham, was designed and created between 1738 and 1773 by Hon Charles Hamilton, one of the most dramatic designers of his day. Plantings found at Painshill reinforce the spectacular garden architecture. Come see the bastion and vineyard, the abbey, the gothic temple, an amphitheatre, grotto, and Chinese bridge and other structures, all meticulously kept. The landscape offers habitats for wildlife, including the Grey Heron and other birds.
Abbot's Hospital in Guildford is the final resting place of George Abbot, Archbishop of Canterbury (1611-1633). Abbot founded The Hospital of the Blessed Trinity in 1619. The courtyard and Jacobean-style chapel is worthy of a long stay. The hospital continues its 400-year tradition of caring for the elderly.
As England's first Cistercian abbey (founded in 1128), Waverley Abbey was built on a beautiful site near Farnham. The River Wey glides through the abbey, and along with a disused medieval bridge, walls and the ends of the two dormitories the peaceful Cistercian setting is well kept by English Heritage. Ample grassed space makes for an optimal environment for a picnic.
7. Polesden Lacey - Great Bookham, Surrey, RH5 6BD - Tel No: 01372 458203
Polesden Lacey in Great Bookham was once host of Edwardian society's rich and famous. This estate's main residence was transformed into a huge country Regency mansion in the early 20th century. The spectacular gardens are part of 1,400 acres of parkland. So grand is Polesdan Lacey that Queen Elizabeth spent the first week of her honeymoon here in 1923.
