About the Norfolk Broads

Positioned in the counties of Norfolk and Suffolk, the Norfolk Broads are a network of rivers and lakes on the east coast of England. This gives the region a great reputation for sailing and other water-based endeavors. Even though the term Norfolk Broads and Suffolk Broads are used to relate to each individual county's area of the Broads, they are often just combined to be called the Norfolk Broads.

It was long considered that the broads were a natural part of the landscape but it wasn't until the 1960s when it was discovered that they were in fact artificial. They had formed due to flooding from former peat excavations. Peat was harvested and sold on as fuel to the traders in Great Yarmouth and Norwich in the Middle Ages.

The Norfolk Broads are dotted with drainage windpumps and windmills that have come to symbolize the region. Muttons Mill, How Hill and Brograve Mill are stereotypical visual examples of how many perceive the landscape of Norfolk and Suffolk to be like.

The area has a rich link to literature with the epic 'Wind in the Willows' by Kenneth Grahame set in the Norfolk Broads and the novels of Arthur Ransome were deeply inspired by the district.

There is a lot to do in the Norfolk Broads and surround area. Norwich is the biggest city within traveling distance that offers superb shopping and amenities. Ipswich is another large town that is worth a visit. Go Ape! High Wire Forest Adventure Park is a great place to take the kids whilst the Museum of the Broads is the perfect place to absorb the history of this unique part of England that has so much to discover.

With an array of historical buildings, museums, sightseeing tours and arts venues, the Norfolk Broads has an incredible mixture of the rural and the urban lifestyles to make sure every taste is satisfied.
