About County Armagh

Court cairn County Armagh
St Marks Parish Church

County Armagh is situated in the south of Northern Ireland. It is the smallest of the six counties in Northern Ireland. Famous for its fertile land it is known as the Orchard County. Armagh, the county town, is the place where Saint Patrick lived, and it is considered to be the starting place of Christianity in Ireland.

Notoriously, the south of Armagh was one of the most militarized areas in Western Europe due to The Troubles. South Armagh is mainly nationalist territory where the presence of British rule is genuinely not agreed with.

Newry and Portadown accompany Armagh as the county's largest urban settlements. The transport around the region makes traveling relatively easy with the M1 linking Belfast to Dungannon across the North with the A1/N1 linking Belfast to Dublin so a venture to the Republic of Ireland is not too far away.

Places of interest within the county include Armagh Observatory, Navan Fort which used to be home to the rulers of Ulster, Gosford Castle and Slieve Gullion which is an extinct volcano.

The county itself shares a coast with the Lough Neagh which is the largest lake in Ireland. This encapsulates the outstanding areas of natural beauty that Northern Ireland has to offer whilst also offering a fine mix of countryside and urban adventure.
