County Londonderry Attractions and Heritage Sites (Places to Visit)

1. Ness Country Park - Killaloo, Claudy, County Londonderry, BT47 3TR - Tel No: 02871 338417

This park is located in the beautiful Burntollet Valley, within a picturesque wooded glen. Extensive renovations have recently been conducted on the park, which consists of 55 mixed woodland hectares and parkland. The woods are linked with Donaghy's Farm, which provides visitors with 7 kilometers of riverside and woodland walking paths, all of which provide gorgeous valley views. The Country Park also contains a meadow area that has several locations where visitors can walk. The attractions in the park include wildflower meadows, picnic tables, and wildlife pounds. The Visitor Centre also contains exhibitions detailing the biodiversity of the woodland. 

2. Foyle Valley Railway Museum - Foyle Road, Derry, County Londonderry, BT48 6SQ - Tel No: 02871 265234

The museum, which opened in 1989, contains exhibitions describing the rise and fall of the Derry railways. These exhibits contain memorabilia along with actual trains. Tourists and visitors to the museum are able to ride on an actual County Donegal Railway train through two miles of track next to the River Foyle. The museum's grounds are also next to the Riverside picnic area and park. 

3. Workhouse Museum and Library - 23 Glendermott Rd, Derry, County Londonderry, BT48 6BG - Tel No: 02871 318328

The Workhouse which opened in 1840, ceased being a Workhouse in the year 1948 but remained, until 1991, a hospital. Although much of the building was demolished, historians were able to save part of the original Workhouse. Currently, the exhibition contains archives, artifacts, the Atlantic Memorial exhibition, as well as numerous traveling and temporary exhibitions. The Workhouse and Museum are also popularly believed to be haunted. 

4. Castledawson Open Farm - Leitrim Road, Castledawson, County Londonderry, BT45 8BW - Tel No: 02879 468207

The Farm contains a collection of unique items that are attractive to both young and old alike. Once a simple dwelling for animals, the farm has become a much more magnificent location. Recent renovations were done using the Peace and Reconciliation fund. Today, visitors to the farm are able to browse the collection of old photographs and antiques that have been collected over a period of many years. The venue hosts numerous charity events throughout the year and draws visitors with its beautiful farm and live music.

5. Garvagh Museum and Heritage Centre - Garvagh, Coleraine, County Londonderry, BT51 5AE - Tel No: 02829 558216

Garvagh Museum is a folk museum which is located at the Garvagh House, which dates back centuries. The collection of items consist of about 2,000 artifacts that have become a very important resource that is utilized by both adults and children. In fact, schools frequently use the collection of these exhibits to research projects. The collection's artefacts, some of which date back to 3000 BC in the Bann Valley, have been preserved and are utilized by all different types of people.

Derry's Walls, County Londonderry

6. Historic Walls of Derry - Derry, County Londonderry, BT48 6AT - Tel No: 02871 267284

The last completely walled Irish city, Londonberry's walls were built during the early 17th century. The Walls have an approximate circumference of 1.5 km and form an inner city walkway that provides a beautiful view of the city and its original street plan. The gates of Derry which date back to the original wall are known as Butcher Gate, Shipquay Gate, Ferryquay Gate, and Bishop's Gate. Three more gates have been added to the city, these being New Gate, Castle Gate, and Magazine Gate. 


7. Roe Valley Country Park - Limavady, County Londonderry, BT49 9NN - Tel No: 02877 722074

The Roe Valley Country Park contains woodland paths and beautiful views of the river. The Park consists of three miles of land on both sides of the River Roe, allowing visitors a chance to fish for trout and salmon as well as canoe. The Park is also a popular venue for rock climbing on O'Cahan's rock. The Park also contains a museum which consists of numerous exhibits as well as a cafeteria that provides visitors with healthy food options. 

8. Downhill Demesne and Hezlett House - Mussenden Road, Castlerock, County Londonderry , BT51 4RP - Tel No: 02820 731582

The Downhill Desmesne contains beautiful walking paths and gardens, where the visitor can view the beautiful countryside. The mansion on the property once belonged to Earl Bishop but is now in ruins. The Hezlett House, a 17th century house, gives visitors the opportunity to learn about the life of the people who resided in the area.

9. Saint Columb's Cathedral - London Street, Derry, County Londonderry, BT48 6RQ - Tel No: 02871 267313

Considered by many to be the epicenter of the town, Saint Columb's Cathedral has stood and been the center of worship in the city of Londonberry since 1633. The cathedral was built in honor of Saint Columba, who founded a settlement of Christians during the 6th century. The Cathedral is a beautiful attraction for visitors but still remains a place of worship to this day. 

10. Riverwatch Visitor Centre & Aquarium - 22 Victoria Road, Derry, County Londonderry, BT47 2AB - Tel No: 02871 342100

The Riverwatch Aquarium and Visitor Centre is a popular attraction for tourists and is located right outside of the city's Centre. The aquarium offers free admission and can be enjoyed by young and old alike. The location is perfect for watching and learning about fish as well as local wildlife. The aquarium houses many different species, including crabs, starfish, lobster, coalfish, blenney's as well as numerous species of freshwater and saltwater fish and shellfish. The types of animals at the aquarium are constantly changing, encouraging visitors to enjoy the experience more than once.
