1. Duart Castle - Isle of Mull, Argyllshire, PA64 6AP - Tel No: 01680 812309

Duart Castle in Scotland sits on the Isle of Mull, Argyllshire. This castle is hundreds of years old and attracts many visitors each year. Visitors can walk around the castle and see the kitchen, the banqueting hall, and see the place in the dungeons where prisoners stayed. Duart castle even has its own restaurant.

2. Inveraray Castle - Cherrypark, Inveraray, Argyllshire, PA32 8XE - Tel No: 01499 302203

Inveraray Castle is not quite as old as Duart Castle. It was built in the 1700's and is still home to Scottish Duke of Argyll. However, visitors can still enjoy walking through the castle for a small fee and wandering the grounds for free. This is a good place to learn about the rich history of the Dukes of Argyll. There is also a gift shop to buy souvenirs from when visiting the castle.


3. Benmore Botanic Garden - Dunoon, Argyllshire, PA23 8QU - Tel No: 01369 840509

Benmore Botanic Garden spreads across one-hundred twenty acres and is home to hundreds of species of plants. The Botanic Garden was started in a mountain setting in the 1800's and visitors can still see hints of its history throughout the Garden. There is a gift shop and restaurant available for visitors to enjoy while walking around the lush gardens.

4. Kilmartin House Trust - Kilmartin, Argyllshire, PA31 8RQ - Tel No: 01546 510278

The Kilmartin House Trust runs the Kilmartin House Museum, a place where the numerous artifacts outlining Scottish history are found. The area of Kilmartin is full of archaeological treasures, and many of the things on display in the museum were located nearby. The museum has a cafe and gift shop, both of which help raise money for the Kilmartin House Trust.

5. The Arctic Penguin Museum  - Inveraray, Argyllshire, PA32 8UY - Tel No: 01499 302213

Outside the Maritime Museum you will find the Arctic Penguin, a schooner that was built in 1910. This boat is a museum in itself with displays, activities, and a coffee shop. Visitors will learn about the horrors of old ships that were used for immigrants and slaves. Many historical treasures are waiting aboard the Arctic Penguin.

6. Inveraray Jail - Inveraray, Argyllshire, PA32 8TX - Tel No: 01499 302381

A jail might not be where most people would think of visiting on their vacation, but the historic Inveraray Jail is a popular stop for visitors. At the jail, you have the opportunity to talk with costumed actors and actresses who portray what life was like for prisoners in the 19th century. You can walk around and watch mock trials and even experience a sample of the punishments that prisoners endured.

7. Museum of Islay Life - Port Charlotte, Isle of Islay, PA48 7UA - Tel No: 01496 850358

The Museum of Islay Life houses many artifacts and information about Islay life dating back to pre-historic times. Here you will find things such as stone tools, relics saved from ships that went down, many old books, and several hundred photographs.

8. Mull Museum - Tobermory, Isle of Mull, PA75 6NY - Tel No: 01688 301100

The Mull Museum is small but is filled with information about the history of Mull. Many exhibits throughout the museum show what life was like for the people of Mull from the time they lived in duns to recent times. You can see how the early people of Mull survived by crofting, fishing, and farming the land.

At the Glencoe and North Lorn Folk Museum, you can immerse yourself in history by seeing different cloths and costumes, displays about medicine used a long time ago, learn about weapons used in war, and find information about local, social history.

10. Cruachan Visitor Centre - Dalmally, Argyllshire, PA33 1AN - Tel No: 01866 822618

A trip to the Cruachan Visitor Centre gives you several interesting bits of information about the Cruachan Power Station. This information takes you through fifty years of the power station's history, and shows diagrams and models of how the station works. Visit the gift shop and find toys, chocolates, and gifts for everyone.
