Inverness-shire is an old county in north Scotland also includes North Uist, South Uist and Harris in the Outer Hebrides, Small Isles in the Inner Hebrides and the Isle of Skye.

Inverness is the capital of the Highlands and lies at the mouth of the river Ness which is on the extreme inland part of the Moray Firth. The river is fed from Loch Ness which by volume is the largest lake in Britain and best known for its sightings of the Loch Ness Monster or Nessie as she is affectionately known.
