Drum Castle is a gorgeous structure that remained in the Irvine family for over 650 years. Over the years, the castle has transformed its image from medieval architecture to include a Jacobean mansion house and a Victorian addition. Inside the castle, visitors may marvel at the incredibly decorated vaulted ceilings, period furniture, portraits, a 16th century chapel and numerous other historical relics. Around the castle, visitors will enjoy the historic rose garden and beautiful wooded walks. 

2. Crathes Castle - Banchory, Kincardineshire, AB31 5QJ - Tel No: 08444 932166

Crathes Castle is one of the most well preserved castles in Scotland. The Burnett family of Leys occupied the area for four centuries. Many of the original painted ceilings remain intact. Visitors from all over the world flock to view its magnificent turrets and the award winning walled garden. The gardens are comprised of eight sections and are available for viewing throughout the year. The turrets look as if they were lifted from a Disney movie. 

Dunnottar Castle, Kincardineshire

3. Dunnottar Castle - Stonehaven, Kincardineshire, AB39 2TL - Tel No: 01569 762173

The Dunnottar Castle sits atop a towering cliff that overlooks the ocean. The view is stunning as the waves from the sea crash against the expansive rock. Visitors of the castle will learn of its impressive history that includes both victories and tragedies. It was at the Dunnottar Castle where a small group of men held off Cromwell's army for eight months to save the Scottish Crown Jewels. In recent history, Dunnottar Castle was the setting for several scenes in the movie Hamlet, starring Mel Gibson. 


4. The Tolbooth Museum  - Stonehaven, Kincardineshire, AB23 2JU  - Tel No: 01771 622906

The Tolbooth Museum is one of the oldest buildings in Aberdeen. Within the well-preserved walls of this 17th century museum, visitors will find historical displays of relics related to crime and punishment. There are 17th and 18th century cells, barred windows and the blade of a 17th century guillotine. Visitors may also request a tour of the incredible building. While touring, the guides will inform onlookers of torture methods and other facts associated with crime and punishment in Aberdeen. 

5. Banchory Museum - Banchory, Kincardineshire, AB31 5SX - Tel No: 01330 823367

Visitors will find permanent displays of relics relating to J. Scott Skinner and the Strathspey King. J. Scott Skinner was a famous musician and composer of the time. Several 18th through 20th century tartans, royal commemorative china and examples of Deeside natural history are on display at the Banchory museum. Visitors may also view Victoriana. The museum offers free admission to all visitors. The hours and days of operation vary based upon the season. Check the website for details. 

6. Royal Deeside Railway - Milton of Crathes, Banchory, Kincardineshire, AB32 5QH

The Deeside Railway delivered passengers and goods to Royal Deeside, Scotland from Aberdeen. This service was provided for nearly 100 years by the Crathes. The service was discontinued in 1966 and has been restored by the Royal Deeside Railway Preservation Society. Families come from all over to view the preserved battery electric train from the Victorian Era.
