Loch Leven Castle, Kinross-shire

The Loch Leven castle resides securely on Castle Island and has been a part of Scotland's history for over three hundred years. From the mid part of 1567 to the mid of 1568, the castle served as a prison for Mary Queen of Scots'. Visitors may reach the island by ferry. The ferry fee is included within the admission price. The castle is only open to visitors from April to September. 


2. Loch Leven National Nature Reserve - The Pier, Kinross, Kinross-shire, KY13 8UF - Tel No: 01577 864439

Loch Leven is a freshwater loch in the Loch Leven National Nature Reserve that attracts numerous, geese, ducks and swans. This area has the largest concentration of breeding ducks in the United Kingdom. Within the nature reserves' waters are two islands. Loch Leven Castle resides on one of these islands. The management team at the nature reserve ensures that the wildlife numbers and commercial fishing are controlled and does not affect the environment. 

3. Kinross House Gardens - Kinross, Kinross-shire, KY13 8ET - Tel No: 01577 862900

Kinross House is a 17th century country house with a walled garden overlooking Loch Leven. Sir William Bruce acted as the lead architect on this home, which he designed for his own inhabitance. The gardens at the home are complete with beautiful roses, colourful herbaceous borders, parterre and a pool. The sheltered walled garden contains picturesque topiaries scattered throughout the property. The house and garden were restored to their original splendor in the early twentieth century. 

4. Burleigh Castle - Milnathort, Kinross-shire, KY13 9SR - Tel No: 01577 863226

Burleigh Castle was constructed in the 16th century near Loch Leven. The ruins of the building remain. Visitors will receive an idea of its splendor. Remnants of arched gateways and corner towers still remain. The corner tower is round at the base and square at the top. This design provided more floor space for the residents of the castle. 

5. Vane Farm - RSPB Visitor Centre, Kinross, Kinross-shire, KY13 9LX - Tel No: 01577 862355

Vane Farm is also a part of the Loch Leven National Nature Reserve. Families and individuals come to the farm to partake in bird watching and views of the wildlife. A trail leading to a beautiful vista is a great place to view the spotted woodpeckers. Ospreys visit the lochs during the summers and in the winter, thousands of pink-footed geese, swan and ducks. During the visit, guests may go to Vane Farm cafe that serves hot and cold food throughout the year.
