Abingdon is the oldest town in England and much of the charm of visiting comes from experiencing this sense of age firsthand. Nowhere else in England can you find a town with such long-lasting historical connections. Abingdon Abbey was set up some time in the 7th century, so that building itself has the longest tradition even in this town that is just full of age. The market was set up much later, but still dates back to 1328. This means that you can wander around the town and see these sites, wondering what it was like for Englishmen seeing the exact same sites more than a thousand years before. This is truly an entertaining prospect, and Abingdon is therefore a town where history feels much more real than it does elsewhere in the world, much more like something that happened and not just something that can be found in books with yellowed pages.
The Rivers
One thing that sets the town apart and gives it a bit of its life is that it is located near to both the River Ock and the River Thames. For those who came to see the waterways, the nearness of these two rivers offers plenty to do. Perhaps you want to take a picnic near the river, sitting in the grass and eating while you listen to the sound of the water rolling gently over itself. Perhaps you want to take a boat tour, seeing the countryside in a brand new way, a way that must have been more typical hundreds of years before when the town was being founded. Either way, you can find a lot to do on the rivers, and they will certainly make your trip memorable.
The Roads
If you do want to travel about the country while you are in Abingdon, you do not need to worry about being too far away from civilization. Abingdon itself has about 30,000 residents, so much of what you need can be found in the town. If you want to go further, however, the town is also near to both the M4 and the M40 roadways. They are easy to access and will grant you travel to many other parts of England.
Since Abingdon was until 1980 the home of the sports car known as the MG, roadways and vehicle travel have always been important to the residents and to the culture of the town.
Historic Sites To See
One place that you should certainly explore is the Abbey Gardens. They are beautiful, containing many old structures, broad walkways, and wide green spaces.
Another building to see is St. Nicholas church; this is built with a tall tower out front and heavy doors in the traditional English fashion.
Finally, you should check out the War Memorial, a tribute to all of the brave soldiers who have been killed in battle, a lasting testament to their courage, bravery, and willingness to give the ultimate sacrifice for the country and the people that they loved.
