Alnwick

Alnwick Castle And River Aln

Nestled in the shadows of Alnwick Castle in north-east Britain, Alnwick has a well deserved reputation among both passing travellers and holidaymakers as a town steeped in tradition. And first-time visitors to Alnwick have the opportunity to get to explore one of the most inspired travel destinations in the north-east. So if you are in search of a holiday away from the cities with plenty of historical sites of interests and a thriving market, Alnwick is the destination for you.

Alnwick Transportation

Motoring to Alnwick is the most popular transportation option. Sadly, Alnwick has no rail station in town centre. But the nearest reliable station rests several kilometres to the east of Alnwick town centre at Alnmouth Station.

To reach Alnwick by road, drive the A1 trunk road north of Newcastle upon Tyne. And keep watch for the A1068, which passes straightaway into Alnwick town centre.

Alnwick History

From a historical perspective, Alnwick dates to the 11th century when the first walls of the town's castle were erected. In the 12th century, Alnwick Castle was the site of brutal conflicts with Scottish invaders and would later become one of the principle residences of the infamous Duke of Northumberland.

Alnwick town proper, which lies at the base of the castle, traces its origins to the town's first market charter during the medieval period of Britain's history. For quite a few centuries, Alnwick thrived as the choice of market and trading town, south of the Scottish border. And to this very day, Alnwick's historic Market Place remains the heart of the town's cultural identity.

What's On in Alnwick

Once you reach Alnwick, you will find a town with plenty of activities, entertainments, and of course, historical sites of interest such as Alnwick Castle, second only to Windsor as the largest castle in the whole of Britain. As a matter of fact, many consider the castle the town's top attraction, particularly the nearby picturesque, well manicured Alnwick Garden's "grand cascade", yet another fine attraction in Alnwick.

In Market Place, the citizens of Alnwick put on festivals throughout the year such as the Alnwick International Music Festival and other fun themed events. And interestingly, there is a monthly farmer's market in town that features locally produced, organic foods.

Theatre enthusiasts would do well to see a show at Alnwick's Playhouse Theatre. What's on at the Playhouse includes cinema evenings, music exhibitions, and even fully-staged productions such as galas and ballets. So if you are in search of a holiday destination with more than enough entertainment opportunities, look no further than a holiday in Alnwick.
