As the county town of East Yorkshire in north-east Britain, Beverley provides first-time travellers with plenty of historical sites of interest and local attractions such as the town's rather large twice-weekly market. Beverley also has been a favoured travel destination for religious pilgrimages to Beverley Minster, reportedly the largest in the whole of Britain. So make travel plans this holiday season to visit Beverley in East Yorkshire and stand in awe of one of Britain's most beautiful religious landmarks.
Beverley Heritage
In a similar fashion as other market towns in the north, Beverley was included within the Kingdom of Northumbria until the town fell victim to Viking raids in the late 9th century, according to historical accounts of the period. The founding of the town, on the other hand, can be traced to the one and only Saint John of Beverley, who was venerated in the 11th century as a saint and, as a matter of fact, founded the minster, too.
Amid the ravages of the Norman Conquest, Beverley was spared the fate of other towns in the region due to its religious and cultural prominence. But during the Protestant Reformation and subsequent Dissolution of the Monasteries in the 16th century, Beverley fell into a period of decline until the Victorian era. Today, Beverley's primary visitor's attraction remains old the minster, a testament to the historical and religious significance of the town.
Attractions in Beverley
First-time travellers to Beverley simply must see the grand nave and stately marble pillars of Beverley Minster, reputedly the largest old parish church in Britain. Those visitors on religious pilgrimage to Beverley Minster have the rare opportunity to pay homage to Saint John of Beverley who is actually interred beneath the nave. Perhaps the best feature of Beverley Minster, the church is internationally famous for its beautiful rose windows, arguably the most stunning feature of the entire church.
Aside from the expanse of Beverley Minster, first-time travellers to town have the opportunity to participate in one of the largest markets in the whole of East Yorkshire. On Wednesdays and Saturdays the town of Beverley springs to life as visitors travel to town in droves. But keep in mind that the largest of the two market days occurs on Saturday.
In addition to local sites of historical interest and market days out, Beverley is home to several festivals throughout the year. The more popular festivals include the Beverley Folk Festival, the Jazz Fest, Chamber Music Festival and the Early Music Festival in the spring, as well.
Beverley Transport
Beverley is well served by road and by rail since the town lies along the Yorkshire Coast Line. For motoring directions to town, follow the M1 north to the M18 and continue along the M62 to the number 37 junction/A614 interchange. Next, travel north to the A1079 and continue east in order to arrive in Beverley town centre.
Beverley Places to Stay
Beverley is replete with highly recommended places to stay near town centre. Best of all, the majority of the choicest accommodations all are within walking distance of the minster. But you can also find places to stay further afield, too.
