Bexleyheath

Italian Gardens At Eltham Palace Nr Bexleyheath

The southeastern Greater London territory began as largely uncultivated land considered deserted and dangerous. Dover Road ran through the area from London to Canterbury and was a favourite of highwaymen. Documents suggest up to 70 coaches used the road daily. In 1730, one coaching inn stood on the west end of the heath. The facility not only accommodated travellers, but also provided a meeting place for local government officials. A windmill stood on the northeast corner and a farm to the southeast.

Poverty existing at during the century brought families looking for a better life. Viewing the heath as open territory, squatters arrived and built shacks. People worked for menial wages as labourers or created brushes from broom plants and peddled the wares in nearby communities. Landowners protested the shantytown and desired to enclose the heath. An appointed commissioner eventually allotted plots of land in 1819 to those establishing homesteads. After this, the heath developed quickly.

By 1832, there were multiple persons employed in over two dozen separate trades. The population by the middle of the century was estimated to be around 2000. Two thirds of these people were born in other areas. Many found skilled and unskilled labour. The community soon outgrew neighbouring Old Bexley and Crayford.
