The village formed in the northern part of the county of southwestern Scotland. Scientific discoveries suggest the first humans to inhabit the area arrived sometime around 3,300 BC. The Brisbane family established an estate here in the late 13th century. The estate remained in the family until 1671, when the Brisbanes moved to Australia, establishing the city that now bears the family’s name. The manor house property became known as Bishopton House. Bishopton began as two separate villages, one known as Blackstown and the other Easter Rossland. These two settlements merged in 1840, taking the name of the Brisbane estate Bishopton.
Bishopton had a post office prior to the two communities uniting. In 1841, the village received railway service, bringing outsiders who settled in the community. In 1916, the government required seven farms to sell out to a firm desiring to construct a munitions factory in Bishopton. The Georgetown Filling Company purchased a total of 2.000 acres (809 hectares). Upon completion, the factory employed 3,300 people. One year later, this number rose to over 10,000 employees. During the 1930s, the company acquired the name Royal Ordinance Factory. Though there are farms on the perimeter of the community, Bishopton no longer enjoys the agricultural prosperity of earlier days. Many of the current citizens commute to work in larger cities.
