Borehamwood

The largely modernised town was founded in the southern part of Hertfordshire. The All Saint's Church was one of two parishes existing in 1086. The town undoubtedly grew around this house of worship. The ancient church was replaced sometime during the 15th century; however, that structure was ravaged by fire in 1891. Borehamwood, or Boreham Wood, was connected to the Elstree parish until around 1909. The population began increasing rapidly following the second world war and the railway link to London encouraged rural living.

The film and movie industries moved into the area during the 1920s, which would later equate the town with the nickname British Hollywood. The local studios have been responsible for filming numerous British television programs along with being the location for various American movies. Borehamwood served as a filming location for "The Shining", the Indiana Jones movies and the Star Wars trilogy. Several of Jim Henson's Muppet Shows were also filmed at the local studio. Simon Cowell is among the notable Borehamwood residents.

The town in recent years has experienced growth in residential housing and contains the modern Borehamwood Shopping Park. The town also sports a multi-cinema complex.

Activities and Attractions

The town offers charming walks through the rural countryside, including a path that leads to nearby Shenley and the wooded park, or visitors might hike up Woodcock Hill. Standing atop of the hill, one may gaze over the landscape and view Dunstable Downs and the St. Albans Abbey spire. The neighbouring town of Estree also contains cycling and walking paths along with fishing opportunities in the 71-hectare (175 acre) Aldenham Country Park. To the delight of youngsters, the park has Winnie-the-Pooh's 100 acre wood and a conservation farm that breeds rare animals.

The Aberford Park, in Borehamwood, provides a relaxing setting among sprawling lawns, lush trees and a manmade lake. Golf enthusiasts may choose from many locations to enjoy 18 holes in the fresh country air. Guests might also consider visiting the local Estree Studios and obtain tickets for a live television performance. The Oscar winning movie "The King's Speech" was filmed here. Recently recorded television programs originating from the studio include "Who Wants to be A Millionaire" and "Big Brother UK."

Places to Stay and Dining

Though considered a rural area, Borehamwood has multiple, large well known chain hotels. Visitors might enjoy a current Skyview movie in the comfort of a guestroom or relax in the facility Jacuzzi. The nearby railway provides access to numerous attractions and locations.

Look no further than the Toby Carvery for a fine dining experience. The venue has budget friendly daytime menus and features children's choices. Feast on roast beef, gammon or turkey with options of various freshly steamed vegetables and all the trimmings. The facility also offers a wide selection of freshly made desserts. Enjoy a homemade trifle or a piece of sinfully delicious chocolate fudge cake.
