Bourne End

Springtime At Bourne End In Buckinghamshire

Bourne End is a charming village that has served as the home of several well known writers in the last century, including Edgar Wallace and Enid Blyton. It is in Buckinghamshire, close to the place where the Thames River and the Wye River meet. With slightly fewer than five thousand five hundred residents, it is small. The village boasts some interesting attractions for tourists. Thanks to its proximity to London, many commuters who work in London call this their home. Visitors will similarly find it a convenient place to stay in or see when in London.

History and Origins of Bourne End

The present day location of Bourne End is different from where it was originally centered. It was founded about half a mile further downstream on the Thames River, at the mouth of the River Wye. Its name means the river's end, as bourne was the Old English name for river. Bourne End is shown on the map that Morden made of Buckinghamshire in 1722.

The history of this village centers on the many water mills found in the valley. Four mills were found near the town, including Lower Mill, Hedsor Mill, Jackson's Mill, and Princes Mill. Most of the people either worked at one of these mills, in two Thames River wharfs, or on farms.

The sleepy village gained in prominence with the arrival of the Wycombe Railway Company in 1846. By 1874, this village had its own Bourne End station. Bourne End expanded faster than other settlements in the region as a result.

Before long, today's Bourne End emerged as the nearby villages of Coldmoorholme, Little Marlow, and Well End merged into Bourne end. At this point, the interesting Parade that visitors will want to see developed into the village's center for services and shops. A school and church were also built around the end of the nineteenth century.

Activities and Entertainment around Bourne End

It should not come as a surprise that the centre of activities and entertainment in Bourne End is the river. Thanks to the presence of the Thames, there is a surprising amount of activities available in the village. The Upper Thames Sailing club has been based here for many years. They hold a full week long regatta in the village each June. This is called the Bourne End Week and is worth coming to experience.

Bourne End has other outdoors activities too. There is open space beside the river at the marina for all visitors and residents to enjoy. There are two grounds for recreation found in the village as well.

Shopping in Bourne End

Bourne End is a community that has fought to ensure that its charming shops survive. There are a variety of bustling shops mostly found in The Parade. The village has put on a number of interesting community based events located on this centre of the village, like the December Fun Night to keep the residents and visitors supporting the locally based businesses and shops. Another shopping area can be found on Furlong Road. Those travelers who love authentic village shops will be thrilled with Bourne End.
