Bridgend

Sea Cliffs And Pebbles Nr Bridgend

The community lies in the River Ogmore valley in the southern county of Glamorgan. Prehistoric burial mounds indicate early human habitation. Residents believe a portion of the road leading to Cowbridge was part of an ancient Roman road. Norman barons entered the territory in 1066 and gained control of the lands. Robert Fitzhamon constructed the Newcastle Castle and William de Londres constructed the Ogmore Castle here in 1106. The fortified Benedictine Ewemny Priory and the Coity Castle, constructed by Maurice de Londres in 1141, created a rectangular defence surrounding Bridgend.

The community developed along a ford of the River Ogmore, which was a main route stretching from the east to the western regions of Wales. Bridgend adopted its name from the 1400s bridge constructed over the river. The community grew as an agricultural centre with a popular market that continued into the 1900s. The valley was the first to experience industrialisation.

North of Bridgend, coal mining began in the 1600s. The confluence of the Garw, Llynfi and the Ogmore rivers were important to mining, supplying power and a means of export. Soon brickworks and ironworks companies followed. Bridgend operated several quarries. The introduction of the railway provided a main route to London and served as transport for taking coal to nearby ports.

During the second World War, Bridgend served as a prisoner of war camp. The community also had a munitions factory and a vast underground munitions storage system. In 1960, the River Ogmore, which runs through the middle of town, overflowed requiring the development of concrete barricades to protect the town. Also during this era, Bridgend became the headquarters for the South Wales police force.

In the 1980s, mines began closing, but major corporations moved into Bridgend, which provided employment options. Housing estates developed and the population continued growing.

Activities and Attractions

Castle enthusiasts have the opportunity of exploring three ruins in the area:

Newcastle Castle stands on a hill overlooking Bridgend. The site contains the curtain wall, two towers and the gateway, which still features ornamental stonework.

North of Bridgend lay the remains of the once expansive Coity Castle. Besides the curtain walls and gatehouse, visitors explore the collection of towers in various stages of disrepair.

South of Bridgend surrounded on three sides by a deep, but dry moat, a semicircle of trees and the vast Wales countryside, the remains of Ogmore Castle border the river. Building foundations, the gateway and portions of the curtain wall remain along with a roofless outer building. The location also has a quaint queue of stepping stones forming a path across the river.

Visitors may enjoy a pleasant stroll through the town, as available leaflets guide the way along a heritage trail. A paved walkway along the riverside leads to a row of chain and independent stores. On the north part of the community, guests venture to the Bridgend shopping centre featuring over 80 shops and stores.

Cyclists find miles of traffic free paths that usually traverse across level ground. Minor roads and special trail paths lead through local villages, nature reserves and wooded areas. Having three rivers in the area means plenty of options for anglers. Learn canoeing, kayaking or take an adventurous white water rafting trip.
