History

Historically known as a quiet seaside town with an infamous streak of a sophisticated smuggling network during the 18th century, Broadstairs developed significantly during the 19th century like many other English towns during the revolution. Due to new rail links with London, Broadstairs became a fashionable 19th century seaside resort.

The town still continues to be an ideal vacation spot due to its beaches, the famous white chalk cliffs that can also be found in Dover and it's ideal rail link. The train station is only 10 minutes from the beachfront. The town is also known for it's picturesque architecture from the Victorian era and many locations that provided inspiration for the novels of Charles Dickens.

Attractions

Broadstairs is famous for its sandy beach bays, two of which have acquired the revered blue flag status, which ensures that the beaches at Broadstairs are some of the best beaches one can visit in England. The popular Viking Bay is one of the beaches with the blue flag status and wildly popular with both tourists and locals.

There are also plenty of ways to amuse oneself in the Harbour area with the Pavilion and the Windsor Cinema. Also, the Viking Coastal Trail also begins in this area.

One main draw for visitors, especially for visitors who love literature is the connection that Charles Dickens has with Broadstairs. Charles Dickens lived in Broadstairs and many of his inspirations for his novels were either found here or in neighbouring towns. For example, the Dickens House Museum belonged to Miss Mary Pearson Strong who was the inspiration for the character Miss Betsey Trotwood in David Copperfield. Also, Broadstairs holds an annual Charles Dickens festival that attracts many visitors as well.

Food and Places to Stay

Given the size of the local population, the number of pubs located in Broadstairs is staggering, but also guarantees that many will be pleased given the different options available. The seafront pubs are particularly popular, especially during the summer. Also, Broadstairs is known for their ice cream parlours that are popular all year-round. In addition to these options that are also many restaurants serving a variety of cuisines available as well. However, their restaurants serving seafood freshly caught from the sea are available for all type of budgets and worth exploring.

For lodging, there are many small hotels, large chain hotels are few and far between and are more likely to be found in one of the larger towns nearby such as Canterbury. There are also many Bed and Breakfast guesthouses and self-catering accommodation options, typically in cottages.
