Burnham-On-Sea

Lighthouse At Burnham-On-Sea

Burnham-on-Sea lies along the golden sand beaches of Bridgwater Bay in Somerset, known for the unique geography of the Somerset Levels in south-west Britain. Every travel season throngs of first-time and returning visitors descend upon Burnham-on-Sea in search of a change of pace away from the typical lot of heavily-trafficked seaside resort towns. So visit Burnham-on-Sea this holiday season and partake of the wide variety of festivities along the Esplanade and miles of well manicured beaches, too.

History of Burnham-on-Sea

Historical and archaeological surveys of the Somerset Levels suggest that human settlement of Somerset pre-dates the Roman era of Britain's history. Habitation of Burnham-on-Sea, on the other hand, truly began during the Roman period, but during the subsequent centuries, the encroaching tidal waters of Bridgwater Bay gradually reclaimed the land.

Surely, much of the history of Burnham-on-Sea has much to do with concerted efforts to stem the encroachment of the tide, as well efforts to guard against shipwrecks in the mudflats offshore. As such, Burnham-on-Sea is home to one of the most thorough collections of historical lighthouses in the whole of Britain, and today, this maritime heritage remains as strong as ever.
