With the urban sprawl of Manchester to the north-west, Buxton makes for an ideal weekend holiday destination if you are in search of a break from the bustle of an urban lifestyle. And every year Buxton services over a million visitors seeking to partake of the Peak District National Park.
Some have described Buxton as the ideal starting point for a holiday at the Peak District. And they would not be at all wrong. Buxton's location in the midst of the park and its proximity to Manchester make the town ideal indeed.
Travelling to Buxton
You can travel to Buxton a number of ways. The A5004/Manchester Road brings travellers from the north of Buxton while the A515/Ashbourne Road carries visitors to Buxton from the south. Buxton is even accessible via the A6/Bakewell Road to the east and the A53/A54/St. John's Road to the west.
But perhaps the best way to find Buxton is by train. Buxton is serviced by the Buxton railway station. And the travel time between Manchester Piccadilly and Buxton is a scant 45 minute ride.
Famous Landmarks
Any conversation about "the gateway to the Peak District National Park" would be incomplete without mentioning Poole Cavern. Located to the south of town, Poole Cavern is one of the region's most spectacular natural wonders and an absolute must-see for first time visitors.
The cavern is open to the public for tours and stretches more than 300 metres. Weathered limestone walls and some of the largest stalactites in the UK add to the mysterious ambience of Poole Cavern.
Similarly, St. Ann's Well is another natural wonder worth seeing in Buxton. This geothermal spa was once the cultural centre of Buxton's storied past. And for sure, St. Ann's Well contributed to Buxton's reputation as "the Bath of the North".
Fishermen would do well to drop their lines in Errwood Reservoir. Here you can purchase day tickets and try your luck at fly fishing. Local anglers also report that the rainbow trout are plentiful in the warm months too.
Buxton Festivals
The people of Buxton put on annual festivals in order to showcase the town's long and storied history. The most visited of these festivals is Well Dressing Weekend, which now has all of the fun and flare of a street carnival. Indeed, well dressing is celebrated throughout the Peak District which is noted for its geothermal spa towns.
Every summer the Buxton festival injects a bit of culture into the town with special attention paid to opera, music, and literature. And the Buxton Opera House continues to be one of the town's major tourist attractions.
Built in 1903 and designed by the famed architect Frank Matcham, the Buxton Opera House still hosts events to this very day. In fact, the facility puts on over 400 performances each year, sponsored by local businesses and performance arts societies.
