History
Canterbury is one of the most well known towns in Kent due to historical importance of the murder of Thomas Becket occurring in this town. In addition to the folklore that surrounds this event, Canterbury is also known for literary traditions as the world famous Canterbury Tales are named after this town. Also, the famous 16th century writer, Christopher Marlowe of Dr. Faustus fame was born here. Canterbury is also known for its universities and its preservation of the historical town centre despite the heavy bombing of the town during World War II.
Attractions
One of the main attractions of Canterbury is to see the Canterbury Cathedral. The Cathedral is an excellent example of medieval architecture and as the location of the murder of Thomas Becket. Many of the original stain glass windows still exist. The oldest stained glass window dates back to 1176. The church continues to be the seat of the Archbishop of Canterbury, a post that was created under Henry VIII when he established the Church of England
A defining feature of the town is the River Stour. The river is host to regular river tours of the town as well as boats available for rent to go punting. The River Tours are extremely popular and provide visitors a 40-minute tour of the town from the river.
Another main draw to the town is the Marlowe Theatre, named after Canterbury resident, Christopher Marlowe. The theatre regularly puts on performances throughout the year, which varies from classics to west end, to more independent productions.
There are also many green spaces available for relaxation in and outside the town. The most popular park is the Dane John Gardens, which located near the town's stone walls that date back to 1551 and the Dane John Mound which provides fantastic views of the area. The park is a popular venue for events and festivals throughout the summer and also has a children friendly maze.
Food and Places to Stay
Many places are available in Canterbury to satisfy one's hunger. Also, many restaurants and pubs are budget friendly due to the large population of students and their bare-bones budget. Due to the fact that Canterbury is one of the main towns of Kent, plenty of accommodation is available such as hotels and self-catering accommodation.
