Caterham

Saxons established a ridge top settlement here in the eastern area of what is now Surrey. The land became the property of the Waltham Abbey and wealthy landowners. The first manor house belonged to the monastery until 1544. Other manor houses developed and property passed from person to person by sale, or was handed down through generations of families.

For centuries, village residents held specialized trades or were employed as laborers for tenant farmers. While located on the ridge, Caterham grew slowly. Caterham was also along an ancient roadway, bringing coach travellers and traders into town.

Inns and pubs emerged that accommodated weary guests. During the Victorian era, Caterham moved down the ridge into the valley. The village established a High Street having various shops and trades. Farmland became houses and villas. In 1870, the community constructed an asylum capable of housing 2000 people. In 1877, the military built barracks on the hill for infantry soldiers. The facility became the largest in the country and remained open until the 1990s.

A list of notable celebrities born in Caterham includes actor Bill Nighy and footballer Nicky Forster.

The North Downs Way passes outside of town and consists of 153 miles (246km) of byways, paths and roadways that follow close to the medieval Pilgrim's Way road. Nearby Coulsdon Common provides acres of open spaces and wooded areas for sporting activities or nature strolls.

Golf enthusiasts find a number of modern courses in and around Caterham, complete with clubhouses, restaurants and shops. Facilities also have professional golfers on hand for lessons or technique tips. Younger visitors may enjoy Skaterham. The East Surrey Museum in Caterham contains numerous collections that depict the county's history from the Stone Age to modern times. Exhibits include archeological and geological artefacts, clothing, common household items and tools. The building has interactive exhibits for younger guests and an exhibit dedicated to John Tooms, considered the father of modern dentistry.

Visitors may also venture to the old section of Caterham, located at the top of the hill. Exploring this section of the community allows guests to encounter many historical buildings including the St. Lawrence church, built in 1095.
