Chathill

For an ideal, unspoilt countryside holiday destination, visit the tiny village hamlet of Chathill in the north-east in order to enjoy Northumberland' best kept secret. Although small in stature, Chathill's proximity to the Northumberland Coastal Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and the tourist harbour of Seahouses makes a visit to town well worth the travel.

Historically, the area today known as Chathill witnessed much warfare during the conflicts between Scotland and Britain in the middle ages, much like other towns in Northumberland. But today, all that remains of Chathill's harrowing origins is Preston Tower, a 14th century Pele tower and keep located south of Chathill town centre near the village of Preston.

Travelling to Chathill

Despite the town's tiny population, Chathill is well served by the Chathill Railway Station, which rests spot on in the centre of the village. And the rail conveniently runs along the East Coast Main Line via Newcastle upon Tyne and cities further up the line.

If you would prefer to motor to Chathill, you will find several useful routes into the village. Mainly, first-time visitors motor to Chathill by utilising the A1 trunk road, which bypasses Chathill to the west of the village. Unfortunately, there are no major roads that will take you straightaway to Chathill. So you will have to keep careful watch for landmark signs through the towns of Preston, Newstead, and Newham off the A1.

What to Do in Chathill

When you treat yourself to a daytrip or extended holiday in Chathill's quaint, well managed cottages and guest houses, you will be delighted at the expanse and beauty of the town's surrounds. Ideally situated within driving distance of the North Sea coast, first-time travellers to Chathill can enjoy walks along the serene, peaceful beaches south of Seahouses, or follow the road less travelled and explore the open pastoral countryside about the village.

The Chathill and Preston area of Northumberland is famous for the variety of wildlife and natural beauty. And an increasing number of travellers continue to choose to stay in the sleepy hamlet of Chathill over the large hotels along the county's coastal towns.

History lovers would do well to plan a daytrip to Preston Tower, which is located south of Chathill town centre proper. An old Pele clock tower and keep, Preston Tower stands as a remnant of Northumberland's infamous wartime heritage of the bygone centuries. And best of all, there are several woodland walking paths to choose from near Preston Tower.

Chathill Lodgings

Quiet, pastoral places to stay near Chathill transform first-time visitors into loyal returning travellers. Reserve accommodations in one of the villages guest houses, or countryside cottages. And after a few days away from the brisk pace of modern living, you will see why Chathill in Northumberland may hold the title as the best kept secret in the whole of the county.
