Evidence of human occupation indicates Romans resided in this region during the early period of the town's history. The destination known as Castle Hill contains remnants of an ancient hill fort where Roman coins were discovered. In 1086, the area was called Cisedune and contained farmland, woodland and livestock.
A grand manor estate constructed in 1348 is now contained within the Chessington World of Adventures amusement park complex. During the Civil War, the house became a royalist stronghold. Cromwell and his forces eventually destroyed the building.
During Chessington's early history, land largely belonged to the Wateville and Crispin families. Landowners developed sizable country estates and one such home once belonged to local playwright Samuel Crispin. Now known as Chessington Hall the home was originally constructed in 1520.
A small village in its early days, the community is now an extension of the sprawling London metropolis. The former hospital once housed a balloon unit operated by the Royal Air Force and was of major importance during the second world war. Transportation in and around Chessington includes bus service and two railroad stations.
Activities and Attractions
The city's most popular attraction is the Chessington World of Adventures resort. The massive location has nine separately themed lands containing rides and amusements for all ages. The location also has a zoo and underwater sea life exhibits. Themed areas include rides and entertainment based on China, Egypt, Mexico and Transylvania. The Toytown area contains amusements especially designed for younger guests. The zoo has over 1000 animals on display and contains a recreation of an authentic African village. The sea life centre contains aquatic exhibits that include sharks, rays and tropical fish. Guests come face to face with marine life in rock pools and underground sea tunnels.
Located on the River Thames' banks, Ham House is an exquisite seventeenth century mansion that welcomes guests to explore the facility with its artwork collection and original furnishings. Explore the traditional dairy and icehouse or watch the musings of the green parakeets who make their homes in the trees of the outer courtyard.
Though the original building date is unknown, St. Mary's Church was first documented in 1174. The Chancel and north wall remain from this time period. The massive wooden beams originate from medieval times. The church contains twelfth century masonry, a panel depicting the Annunciation, created in 1376, and a font from the thirteenth century.

Hotels located in the world famous resort have specially themed rooms for younger guests. Family rooms allow children their own sleeping area complete with personal TVs. These facilities ensure guests are never too far from the fun and excitement of the amusement park.
The Monkey Puzzle restaurant offers spacious, but cosy dining, with a floor plant that largely contains booth type furnishings. Guests order a variety of char-grilled meals comprised of beef, chicken, lamb or seafood. The facility also offers salads and vegan meals.
