Chipping Norton

The Bliss Tweed Wool Mill Chipping Norton

The small Saxon settlement developed at the bottom of a hill in the northwestern region of Oxfordshire. A motte and bailey castle once stood on the hill, but now only the earthworks remain. St. Mary the Virgin Church was constructed in the 1100s beside the castle, and continues standing today. Wealth gained from sheep farming, wool and associated trades financed Chipping's buildings. The industry would continue for centuries. The community constructed almshouses in 1640, for the community's impoverished citizens.

Alongside wool mills, Chipping also had glove making, an iron foundry and tanneries. The town established a workhouse in the eighteenth century, which would later become the town hospital. In 1763, the Reverend Stone discovered that willow bark had analgesic properties, which led to the creation of aspirin.

William Hitchum established a brewery in 1796, which would later include a malt house and facility wells. The establishment grew after purchasing other breweries, but closed its doors in 1931.

Chipping Norton had local recording studios that produced many popular song titles, and whose clients included Duran Duran and Jeff Beck.

Activities and Attractions

The area is filled with scenic beauty from the Chipping Norton Lake to the wooded hills. Cyclists and walkers find numerous trails to follow, some of which were travelled by knights and princes.

Centuries of history lie within the town's buildings. St. Mary Church was originally built in the 1100s, with additions spanning 300 years. Though having been renovated and repaired, primary features remain. Wood and stone carvings, stained glass and artefacts grace the interior of the church. Across from the church lie the stately 1640s Almshouses. The eight connected cottages once provided housing for the town's poor and widowed.

The Chipping Norton Museum houses artefacts from ancient civilizations. The facility commemorates local industries that included brewing and wool production. Visitors may also learn about baseball in Chipping. The Chipping Norton Theatre provides regular live performances and films. The facility also holds workshops celebrating the various arts.

Archaeology and mystery buffs can venture into the countryside and visit Rollright Stones. Legend and theories abound as to the origin of the unusual stone complex. The faeries supposedly grant the wishes of anyone who can count the same number of stones three times in a row.
