Dawlish

Dawlish Warren

On the southern Devon coast of southwestern England lies the little seaside resort of Dawlish. The area was inhabited prior to the 1st century by the Romans who remained in the region until 400 AD. Besides farming and fishing, the local residents harvested salt from the water. Eventually salterns were developed to extract and dry the salt and store the finished product in cellars or sheds. This industry continued until Anglo/Saxon occupation sometime between 400 and 1000 AD.

The majority of the residents established settlements upwards from the water, as history depicts floods and storms. Evidence of these early settlements has been discovered on various local farms. From the 11th century until the 19th century, the town belonged to the Exeter Cathedral. Eventually, Regency and Victorian styled manor houses surrounded primitive medieval cottages. The introduction of the railway in the mid 19th century brought many of the country's wealthy to Dawlish on holiday, which started the tourist trade in the area.

Activities and Accommodations

The region is filled with hiking and walking paths travelling along the shore and up into the hills around the town. For the outdoor enthusiast, water sports abound, whether visitors want to swim, sail or embark on fishing excursions. Cruisers also take guests on tours up and down the scenic coast. Local adventure companies not only supply equipment, but also offer instruction for a wide range of activities, land or water based.

Dawlish has two beach areas, one being on the main seafront and the other, Dawlish Warren, further down the coast. This location contains over two miles of beach along with grassy play areas, rides, amusements and a selection of cafes.

Stroll down Old Town Street and view the cottages that were the original part of the village. Manor House and Brook House are refined estates depicting the lavish lifestyles of the Victorian. The Dawlish Museum, built in the beginning of the 19th century, was once a gentleman's residence. The building now houses numerous exhibits covering a diverse range of subjects from art to war. As Dawlish is conveniently located between Exeter and Torquay, the railway travels back and forth for those wanting to explore these Devon cities.
